This is the story of two young, newly married Bahá’ís, Ted and Joanie Anderson, who left the comforts of family and friends to pioneer to Whitehorse in the Yukon Territory, thereby becoming Knights of Bahá’u’lláh and a powerful teaching team. Ted was the more public face of the couple, giving talks and later working as an Auxiliary Board member, but Joanie was the one who constantly nurtured friendships, visited the Native people in the hospital or drove them somewhere they needed to go. Over their 19 years in Whitehorse, they learned how to live when the temperature dropped as low as -72°F (-58°C), the winter nights were very long, and when their well ran dry and they had to get water delivered in buckets. At first, they were the only Bahá’ís there, but by the time they left, they had discovered over 400 golden hearts, mostly Indigenous, including almost 100 members of one family. In 1971, eleven Local Spiritual Assemblies were elected.
Earl Redman is a much loved author, known for his warm and approachable style in bringing the stories of the early believers to life for new audiences across the globe. Chris Anderson, Ted and Joanie's son, asked Earl if he would help prepare his parents' book for publication. Earl has carefully revised the original manuscript, focusing on the narrative flow and ensuring that the original text, and so the voices of Ted and Joanie, are preserved in the telling of their inspiring journey.
